EEL 261 - Elementary Methods - Mathematics I Credits: 3
This course is Part 1 of a two-course sequence in elementary mathematics teaching methods. This sequence is designed to explore important ideas that cross boundaries of specific areas of content taught in Part II. These ideas lay out the foundations of mathematics education that are critical to learning how to teach mathematics. Students will learn the basic ideas of what it means to “do mathematics” in addition to understanding constructivist and sociocultural perspectives of students’ learning of mathematics and the key approach to promote that learning in the classroom - teaching through problem-solving. Students will learn how to apply instructional strategies in ways that support and challenge all learners.
