SLS 301 - American Sign Language III

Prerequisite(s): A minimum of a “C-” grade in SLS 202 or ASL Placement Test Score equivalency.
A continuation of American Sign Language (ASL) study and Deaf Culture at the competent level. Students will develop competent ASL skills in comprehension of a message in ASL, demonstrate correct intermediate ASL to English and English to ASL interpretation, identify cultural practices and defining characteristics unique to the Deaf Community, identify the
differences between ASL and other signed communication systems, and contrast the linguistic features of ASL with spoken English. Students will demonstrate conversational fluency through the use of the four parameters of signed communication, comprehension and expression of intermediate grammatical features of ASL in given dialogues, comprehension and expression of intermediate vocabulary in given dialogues, comprehension of grammatical sign principles and non-manual behaviors within an ASL signed message, and
comprehension of vocabulary within an ASL signed message through the answering of questions related to the signed message.

Students will also refine skills in fingerspelling and numbering, identification and use of iconic and abstract signs, and skills in interpersonal communication.

This course addresses state and national certification standards required for students enrolled in the undergraduate Deaf Education Program.
