English Major

The English major provides the opportunity to study the great works of the literary tradition as well as contemporary works that shape our lives. The major develops students’ powers of critical analysis in reading and writing, preparing students to work in fields that require a mastery of language, including teaching, writing, editing, publishing, research, law, and communication.

Students majoring in English are required to take a minimum of 45 hours, as indicated below. Note that ENG 211WI , ENG 212WI , ENG 221WI , ENG 222WI , ENG 315 , ENG 341 , and ENG 470  are required of all majors. Students planning to pursue graduate studies in English are strongly encouraged to take at least six hours of elective coursework in a foreign language, chosen in consultation with the student’s advisor.
